Winterball Baseball benefits the U.S. Marines’ Toys for Tots program. To play, baseball players must donate at least one unwrapped toy for the cause. Sergeant Jonathan Hansen from The 1st Battalion/25th Marines braved the conditions to collect toys from children in need this Christmas – and even played for the Sugar Cookies in their victory!
Sergeant Jonathan Hansen makes the opening remarks, and throws out the games ceremonial pitches (after he isn’t happy with his first toss).
The Sugar Cookies held a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth inning. But that is when young Maddie Notaro stepped up to the plate. Looking much like Little Cindy-Lou Who herself, she smacked a Jay Thomas fastball off the glove of the catcher toward first base. Kevin O’Leary could not make the play and it went between his wickets to the outfield. Maddie reached first base and made no hesitation to head toward second. As she approached, the right fielder threw the ball to second, but it was overthrown, allowing Maddie to head to third. As the errant throw was recovered and thrown in from left field, Maddie headed toward home. There was a play at the plate, but Maddie beat the throw. Safe! Inside-the-park home run!
Fast forward to the top of the 7th inning and the Sugar Cookies are still trailing 2-1. That’s when Ben Buxton (son of Jeff Buxton, who previously fouled a line drive off the stack of toys), led off with a single. He later scored to tie the game 2-2. However, it was short-lived. The Snickerdoodles piled on 2 runs in their half of the 7th inning and 4 more run in the 8th inning to put the game out of reach. The Snickerdoodles won 8-2.
