More Than Two Decades In, 100 Innings of Baseball & the Battle Against ALS Continues
Our ALS partner in 2027 will again be The Angel Fund for ALS Research, which supports the work of Dr. Robert Brown and his colleagues at UMass Chan Medical School. Angel Fund President Rich “Ratt” Kennedy has dedicated more than two decades to raising money for ALS research, with a personal connection that makes the mission especially urgent.
Ratt lost his father and two brothers to ALS. While training for his 31st Boston Marathon in January 2016, he began experiencing tingling in his legs. The symptoms progressed, and in April 2016, he was diagnosed with an inherited form of ALS.
For many years, Ratt has stood alongside our chief umpire, Walter Bentson, who is also living with ALS. Their commitment brings together players, umpires, families, and supporters determined to help find a treatment and cure.
In 2026, 81 players registered for the game, which lasted 30 hours and 45 minutes, from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until 3:45 p.m. Sunday. In addition to 19 iron men who played the entire 100 innings, Scot Leslie and Eddie Cody from the Merrimack Valley Marlins played all 100 innings in the field.
The 2026 game raised $42,476.11 through donations and registration fees, building on more than $1 million raised since the first game in 2004. Every contribution helps continue the work toward a treatment and cure for ALS.
Umpiring crews from throughout Massachusetts help keep the game going around the clock, with Walter traditionally returning behind the plate for his midnight appearance. Whether you play all 100 innings, join for a few hours, umpire, volunteer, or donate, you can help continue the fight against ALS. We hope to see you in 2027!
Richard “Ratt” Kennedy, president of The Angel Fund, addresses players and fans before last year’s 100 Innings of Baseball game in Quincy, MA, alongside umpire chief and event organizer, Walter Bentson. The game to date has raised more than $900,000 for ALS research.
