Directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, the film delves into the players’ troubled backgrounds and the pressures of 1980s New York City that fueled their addictions. Through one-on-one interviews and candid conversations, the documentary reveals the complexities and human vulnerabilities of these baseball legends.

In 2023, seven years after the “Doc & Darryl” documentary aired, the New York Mets announced plans to retire Darryl Strawberry’s number 18 and Dwight Gooden’s number 16 in the following season.
