“Doc & Darryl” is an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary focusing on the rise and fall of New York Mets stars Dwight “Doc” Gooden and Darryl Strawberry. Both were young phenoms who helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series but struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, derailing their once-promising careers.
Directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, the film delves into the players’ troubled backgrounds and the pressures of 1980s New York City that fueled their addictions. Through one-on-one interviews and candid conversations, the documentary reveals the complexities and human vulnerabilities of these baseball legends.
In 2023, seven years after the “Doc & Darryl” documentary aired, the New York Mets announced plans to retire Darryl Strawberry’s number 18 and Dwight Gooden’s number 16 in the following season.
