Bally Sports Short Boys

Bally Sports Short Boys is a playful reaction to Major League Baseball’s then-new pitch clock, which shaved nearly half an hour off game times and made the classic tall boy feel out of step with the faster pace. Bally Sports answered with 8.4-ounce “short boys,” a run of American Pale Wheat beers brewed across multiple cities, each carrying subtle hints of Citra hops for a light citrus lift. The 1970s-style ad campaign backed it up with scenic shots, throwback jingles, and Hall of Famer Randy Johnson starring as the tallest guy in the smallest-can universe, complete with a nod to his legendary pigeon moment.

To bring the idea to life, Bally Sports partnered with five independent breweries across its Bally Sports+ markets: Company Brewing in Milwaukee, City Barrel Brewing in Kansas City, Dog and Pony Show Brewing in Detroit, Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, and Tripping Animals Brewing in Miami. The project worked as a fun, not-so-subtle promotion for the Bally Sports app, blending craft beer creativity with one of baseball’s biggest rule changes of the era and matching the new, faster rhythm of pitch-clock baseball.
