Taiwan
To help revive baseball, President Chen designated 2001 as Taiwan Baseball Year. Demonstrating the government’s commitment to promoting baseball, Taiwan hosted three major international games that year: the 21st Asia Baseball Tournament in March, the 4th Asia AAA Championship in August, and the 34th Baseball World Cup in November. The latter was the first international adult baseball games ever held in Taiwan, with 16 countries sending teams. It was also the first “world cup” for baseball in the 21st century, marking a significant milestone. To expand the scope of “sports diplomacy,” the Directorate issued a set of four stamps, “XXXIV Baseball World Cup Taipei 2001 Commemorative Issue.” Each stamp featured a different baseball figure: a pitcher, a batter, a catcher, and a sliding base runner. The stamps, released on October 30, 2001, had two denominations of NT$5.00, one of NT$12.00, and one of NT$20.00. Mr. Lee Kuang-chi, the staff painter for the Directorate General of Posts, painted the stamps.
Taiwan
The 2001 National Games in Taiwan, commemorating the 90th year of the Republic of China, were jointly hosted by Kaohsiung County, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County, evolving from the Taiwan Provincial Games since 1946. To celebrate, the Directorate General of Posts issued two stamps on October 18, 2001, featuring sports like table tennis, weightlifting, and Taekwondo, along with symbols of the hosting areas and a depiction of a baseball batter in the top-right corner of the NT$5.00 stamp sheet. Designed by UP Creative Design and printed by China Color Printing Co., Ltd., these stamps highlighted the event’s cultural and athletic significance.
